The city of Side became a Lycian possession in the 6th Century B.C., captured by the Persians in 546 B.C. and later taken by Alexander the Great in 334 B.C.. The region enjoyed its greatest period of prosperity in the second century but by the end of that period was invaded and fell under the control of pirates. Things haven't changed much since then. Visitors arrive regularly by sea reminding me of those back in centuries past... known as "Invaders of the Lycian Coast". Oil on canvas, 20"x28"
